Social housing tenants reap the benefits of renewable energy

Lewes District Council has contracted BSW Building Services, a Sussex based central heating firm, to equip approximately 100 of its social housing properties with air source heat pumps. These extract solar energy from the air to heat homes cleanly and efficiently. The pumps generate up to four times more heat than conventional electric heating using the same amount of paid-for electricity, greatly reducing tenants’ energy bills.

We want to provide residents with affordable, reliable energy efficient heating, explains Adrian Woolridge, Lewes District Council’s Housing Contracts Manager. Some of the properties in our social housing scheme use electric heating systems, many of which have become inefficient and costly to run. We needed an alternative solution.

The air source heat pump is an effective solution, explains James Cordner, Renewables Manager at BSW. Because it is cost efficient to run, people can afford to heat their homes whenever they need to and keep themselves healthy, without worrying about big bills arriving in the post. The pump has few moving parts and requires no gas or oil, making for quick installation and minimising servicing and maintenance.

Lewes District Council conducted a trial and found BSW’s air source heat pump installations cut energy consumption dramatically compared to the electrical heating systems used previously. Impressed, it commissioned BSW for a two phase project: To install units in 40 of the council’s social housing properties in phase one, which is already well underway, followed by an expected 60 to 80 properties in phase two later this year.

Adrian from the council continued: With the UK’s weather being so turbulent and energy costs rising remorselessly, never has it been more important for us to combat fuel poverty. Previously, some of our tenants’ heating systems became so inefficient and expensive to run that a number of households were choosing to go without heating altogether, which carries a risk of ill health and causes damp, poor ventilation and mould. Clearly this situation was unacceptable.

BSW’s air source heat pump solution keeps our residents warm and comfortable without breaking the bank. The firm provided a highly professional service and understood our social housing requirement perfectly. Feedback has been excellent; we recommend BSW to other local authorities interested in renewable energy heating solutions.
