Nearly 75% of the UK public believes more needs to be done to combat carbon emissions, according to a survey conducted by dedicated eco-developer Kingerlee Homes.

The survey shows a clear concern among the UK public about the current approach to dealing with carbon emissions. Nearly 90% of respondents are concerned, with 36% very concerned, about the impact emissions are having on the environment.

The survey showed a distinct interest among the public for the future of green housing. Nearly 75% of respondents said they would be interested in living in an environmentally friendly home. However, 58% said they were concerned about the cost of sustaining new technology, 39% with the upkeep of advanced technology and 27% in maintaining the property’s temperature.

However, the survey revealed that many respondents still do not fully understand Government initiatives to decrease carbon emissions within the UK’s housing stock, with over 60% of respondents unsure what a zero-carbon home is and just 23% accurately estimating that it costs around 30% extra to build a zero-carbon home in comparison to a ‘normal’ property.

Despite the introduction of the Energy Performance Certificate, more than 55% of respondents believe the Government should concentrate further on reducing the environmental impact of the country’s old housing stock, as well as in the new homes market.

Jonathan Kingerlee, Chairman of Kingerlee Homes, commented: “The UK public’s concern about the impact carbon emissions are having on the environment is encouraging. More must now be done if we are to overcome the vast quantities attributed to our housing stock. The Government must now focus on educating the public to ensure they understand the new initiatives, such as zero-carbon.

“A dramatic shift in opinion has clearly taken place among the public. They want to know what is being done to combat carbon emissions and whether plans go far enough. At Kingerlee Homes, we are 100% committed to building new homes in a sustainable way. The homes at our flagship scheme at Bladon, Oxfordshire, have been built to such a high specification that they will produce just 40% of the carbon emissions of the average new home. It is our intention that Kingerlee Homes becomes an industry benchmark for excellence in green housebuilding.”
